I believe there are a number of fundamental requirements for an individuals to be productive, happy, and fulfilled. Once these are met, productivity increases as well. One needs to be holistically fulfilled in order to reach actualisation.
In no particular order, I believe the following are incredibly important:
1. Autonomy/independence
One needs to be regarded as an agent. Someone independent who is able to have things of their own. Choices, opinions, feelings, items, experiences. If one is constrained, everything falls apart. Constraints are necessary however one should not feel restrained or locked down.
2. A feeling of value as a result of personal talent, skills, or traits. (competence and effectance)
One should feel that what they have and what they can do is useful and of value. That they are able to make a difference in the world. Either the world at large or for their own world as an individual. That there are areas they are good at. Something is special about the individual and they are able to bring about something good ie. what they have can be applied. The scale is not important and can be as small as "I'm knowledgeable about trivia, this is good because I am able to have engaging conversations with people". It could be "Im good at fixing and I fixed this thing that broke". It could be "this person relied on me because xyz"
3. Personal relationships (relatedness/belonging)
Interaction with people who know and understand them. This relationship has to be long lasting in some capacity, There has to be a feeling of mutual understanding and there has to be a connection between the individuals. Friends, family, partners etc.
Upon further thought, there are two sub classes of this category:
- The first is a relationship with mutual love and affection.
- The second is a relationship in which one can engage and discuss things. Hobbies, interests, thoughts etc. Both of these interactions can come from the same people, however they are not exclusive to them.
4. A means of self expression
One has to have a way to of expressing their thoughts and feelings and working through what is in the mind. This can be writing, journaling, visual art, dancing, singing, etc.
The mind operates in abstract forms and there has to be a process to turn that into someone one can be consciously aware of. The process typically begins by getting the feelings into an abstract yet concrete form and then extracting information from that and building upon it.
5. A series of hobbies and interests
One must have a personal hobby. Something they do. An interest. Something they think about. An activity may provide stimulation. It might also be a mindless activity that one can relax. Ideally, one should not only have one type. There should be both.
Cliche as it is, Im thinking of that quote: "Everyone should have 5 hobbies:"
- One to keep you fit
- One to keep you creative
- One to build knowledge
- One that is useful (original says to make money but thats BS)
- And one to evolve your mindset
This works as a loose guideline.
6. A sense of growth
There has to be upward development in something one values. This can be in terms of one's physical body, fashion sense, financial standing, rank or status, mental wellbeing etc
7. Engagement with something new
This ties to a sense of growth. There has to be new stimuli to engage a person. A change in thinking. Inspiration.
