On tinkering

The famous story of the Russian writer Mikhail Zagoskin and his travel box.

Once he decided to make himself a travel box that would contain everything: toiletries, a library, a telescope, a fish-catching device, a watch, writing materials, snuff boxes, and cigars, which he did not smoke - in short, everything that he needed and did not need, but might need! He bought things, collected his own, cut down to the very lines a beautiful little edition of the French Bible, because it did not fit into the place, and the box came out huge and truly rare.

Fable-writer Dmitriev once said while examining the box: “I find, Mikhail Nikolayevich, that there are many things missing here!” - “And what would that be, for instance?” - “A folding gun, a folding spit and an iron are missing.” “What is it for?” - “If you shoot a bird, you'll want to roast it. And if you get your coat dirty, if you want to wash it yourself, you must also iron it.”

At first Zagoskin took it as a joke, but on mature reflection it turned out that the box really did not contain the most necessary thing for the road, namely a cutlery and other accessories for the table. Zagoskin ordered another box for this purpose.

When the other splendid box was ready, it turned out that they did not fit in the stroller. Then Zagoskin ordered a stroller for the caskets. When the stroller was ready, it turned out that Mikhail Nikolayevich had nowhere to go....
